LOS ANGELES — Action legend Sylvester Stallone will not be returning for the long-awaited follow-up to his 1993 hit Cliffhanger. In a major “creative overhaul,” the project has shifted from a legacy sequel into a full reboot, with former James Bond star Pierce Brosnan and Lily James (Baby Driver) now set to lead the cast.
The news comes as a blow to fans who had been expecting Stallone to reprise his iconic role as Gabe Walker. Recent legal filings and industry reports have shed light on the behind-the-scenes drama that led to the star’s departure.
The Dispute: A “Guaranteed Fee”
According to a lawsuit filed by the film’s producers, Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe, against the financier Rocket Science, Stallone’s exit was primarily due to a financial impasse.
- The Stipulation: Stallone was reportedly prepared to film his scenes during a break from his hit series Tulsa King in late 2023. However, his participation was contingent on his salary being “escrowed” (guaranteed in advance).
- The Breakdown: The lawsuit alleges that financiers failed to provide this guarantee, leading Stallone to walk away without ever signing a binding agreement.
- The Fallout: The loss of Stallone triggered a chain reaction, including the exit of the original director, Ric Roman Waugh (Greenland), and a total retooling of the script.
A New Direction: Father-Daughter Survival
The film, now simply titled Cliffhanger, has moved away from the “Gabe Walker” storyline. Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop, Black Adam), the new version centers on a different family in peril.
The Plot: Pierce Brosnan stars as Ray Cooper, a seasoned mountaineer running a luxury chalet. When he and his daughter Sydney are kidnapped by a gang during a mountain excursion, his other daughter, Naomi (Lily James)—an expert climber haunted by a past accident—must survive the elements to rescue them.
What’s Next for Stallone?
While he won’t be scaling mountains in the Dolomites, Stallone remains busy. He is currently focused on the upcoming seasons of Tulsa King and his reality series, The Family Stallone.
The Cliffhanger reboot wrapped principal photography earlier this year and is currently slated for a wide theatrical release on August 28, 2026.
