LOS ANGELES — In a move that has sent shockwaves through the “streaming wars,” Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios have announced a major licensing agreement that will see some of Prime Video’s most high-profile cinematic assets jump to its biggest rival.
Starting January 15, 2026, Netflix subscribers will have access to a curated selection of iconic franchises, including the crown jewel of the MGM library: James Bond.
The Bond Collection Heads to Netflix
While Amazon acquired MGM in 2022 to bolster its own Prime Video service, this new deal suggests a shift toward a more traditional licensing model. For a limited three-month window, Netflix will stream four major 007 titles:
Skyfall
No Time to Die
Quantum of Solace
Die Another Day
The deal covers major global markets, including the United States, France, Germany, Latin America, and the Nordics.
Beyond 007: Rocky, Creed, and Legally Blonde
The agreement isn’t limited to secret agents. Netflix is also set to become a temporary home for several other massive MGM franchises that have recently been synonymous with Prime Video:
The Rocky and Creed Series: Fans of the boxing sagas will be able to stream select titles from the collection.
The Legally Blonde Films: Reese Witherspoon’s iconic turn as Elle Woods will join the Netflix catalog.
Sci-Fi Classics: In a separate but related win for fans, all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 are returning to Netflix after a three-year hiatus.
Why Is This Happening?
Industry analysts are comparing this to HBO’s recent decision to license titles like Band of Brothers to Netflix. By placing these “legacy” titles on the world’s most-watched streaming platform, Amazon aims to:
Monetize Existing Library: Generating licensing revenue from older content rather than keeping it locked behind a single paywall.
Re-engage Audiences: Building hype for upcoming projects, such as the recently announced Stargate reboot and the next James Bond film (rumored to be directed by Denis Villeneuve).
Broaden Reach: Exposing these franchises to Netflix’s massive 280+ million global subscriber base.
“Bringing these iconic films and shows to Netflix is part of our continued strategy to broaden global reach and re-engage audiences with the MGM library,” said Chris Ottinger, Head of Worldwide Distribution at Amazon MGM Studios.
Availability At-A-Glance
James Bond (Select Films): January 15, 2026- 3 Months
Stargate SG-1: (All 10 Seasons) February 15, 2026- Long-term
Rocky & Creed: January 2026- TBA
The Man in the High Castle: Early 2026- TBA
While Prime Video remains the exclusive home for many “Amazon Originals” like The Boys and The Rings of Power, this deal signals that in 2026, the lines between streaming giants are becoming increasingly blurred in the name of profit and franchise longevity.
