BURBANK, CA — In a milestone moment for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, director Ryan Coogler has officially confirmed that two-time Academy Award winner Denzel Washington will join the cast of Black Panther 3.
The news follows months of “will-they-won’t-they” speculation that began when Washington accidentally leaked his involvement during a press tour in late 2024. Coogler, speaking on the 7PM in Brooklyn podcast, recently put the rumors to rest, stating unequivocally, “There’s no fiction out there about that.”
A “Bucket List” Collaboration
For Coogler, casting Washington isn’t just a production choice—it’s the fulfillment of a lifelong ambition. The director revealed he has been trying to collaborate with Washington “since day one.”
”Denzel is family at this point… I think he’s the greatest living actor, and in terms of what he means to our culture? Forget about it.”
— Ryan Coogler
Washington, now 71, has hinted that this role may be part of his final act before retirement. He previously noted that his current career strategy is focused on working only with the industry’s “best” filmmakers, specifically naming Coogler as a priority alongside projects with Steve McQueen and Spike Lee.
The “Mistake” and the Apology
The road to this official announcement was unusually candid. Washington first let the news slip during a Gladiator II interview, a move that reportedly forced Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige to fast-track the confirmation of the third film’s development.
Washington later admitted to calling Coogler to apologize for the spoiler:
- The Apology: “I called him and apologized for talking about the movie… Ryan’s a genius. Whatever he writes, I’ll read.”
- The Current Stance: When pressed recently for character details, Washington has become famously tight-lipped, simply stating, “That’s between me and Ryan.”
Fan Theories Ignite
While the role remains top-secret, the “Marvel-verse” is already buzzing with theories. Some speculate Washington could play Bashenga (the very first Black Panther) in a flashback sequence, while others hope to see him as a sophisticated new antagonist or a high-ranking Wakandan elder.
Regardless of the role, Washington’s entry marks a significant passing of the torch; the late Chadwick Boseman famously credited Washington for quietly paying his tuition for a summer acting program at Oxford, making this casting a poetic “full-circle” moment for the franchise.
