BURBANK, CA — Despite a shifting production landscape and a pivot from streaming to the big screen, Marvel Studios’ Armor Wars is reportedly still moving forward with a target release window set for 2027 and beyond.
Industry insiders and recent schedule updates from Disney suggest that while the project has been moved to the “back burner” to ensure script quality, it remains a key pillar of the post-Avengers: Secret Wars era. Originally announced in 2020 as a Disney+ series, the project was redeveloped into a feature film in late 2022 to accommodate its “larger-than-life” scope.
The Legacy of Tony Stark
The film is set to star Don Cheadle, reprising his long-standing role as Colonel James “Rhodey” Rhodes (War Machine). The narrative will tackle one of Tony Stark’s greatest fears: his advanced technology falling into the wrong hands.
Following the events of Secret Invasion, where it was revealed that Rhodey had been replaced by a Skrull for a significant period, Armor Wars is expected to delve deep into his recovery and his mission to protect Stark’s legacy.
Current Production Status
While fans have been anxious over the lack of a director announcement, current reports indicate the following:
- Status: In active development (re-tooling script).
- Writer: Yassir Lester remains attached to pen the screenplay.
- Casting: Don Cheadle is confirmed; rumors suggest the return of Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer.
- Timeline: Potential production start in late 2025 or early 2026.
Where It Fits in the MCU Slate
Marvel recently updated its 2027 calendar, leaving two “Untitled Marvel” slots open for July 23, 2027, and November 5, 2027. Analysts suggest Armor Wars is a prime candidate for the November slot, allowing it to serve as one of the first major films to kick off the “Mutant Saga” or the next phase following the Multiverse finale.
As of now, Marvel head Kevin Feige has emphasized a “quality over quantity” approach, which explains the slower development cycle. “We want to make sure that when Rhodey returns, the story carries the weight that the character deserves,” a studio representative hinted in a recent press briefing.
