LOS ANGELES – Just weeks after the successful premiere of the new prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, reports have surfaced that HBO is once again looking toward the future of Westeros. Internal sources and recent filings suggest that a direct sequel to Game of Thrones is back in early development—though it may look very different from the “Jon Snow” project fans originally expected.
The new project, currently in the “fleshing out” stage, is reportedly pivoting to focus on the adventures of Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) following her voyage into the “Sunset Sea” at the end of the original series.
The Pivot from ‘Snow’ to ‘Stark’
For years, a sequel centered on Jon Snow (Kit Harington) was the primary contender for a post-Season 8 continuation. However, despite Harington’s personal involvement in the pitch, the project was shelved in late 2024.
- The “Broken Jon” Problem: Insiders suggest the Jon Snow pitch—which depicted a traumatized, isolated figure living North of the Wall—was deemed “too dark and internal” for a major tentpole series.
- The Arya Alternative: Recent unredacted reports indicate that HBO is now working with writer Quoc Dang Tran (Drops of God) to develop a more expansive series. This new direction would follow Arya as she explores the unknown territories west of Westeros and the exotic cities of Essos.
Westeros 2026: A Growing Universe
The news of a sequel comes as the Game of Thrones franchise experiences its most prolific year to date. HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently emphasized that while development is active, the network is being “judicious” about what actually makes it to air.
The Current Slate:
- A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: Premiered January 18, 2026, to critical acclaim and has already been renewed for a second season.
- House of the Dragon (Season 3): Confirmed for a Summer 2026 release, continuing the Targaryen civil war.
- The Sea Snake (9 Voyages): An animated series led by animation icon Genndy Tartakovsky remains in the works.
While Maisie Williams has previously expressed openness to returning to the role of Arya Stark “under the right circumstances,” neither she nor HBO has officially confirmed her involvement in this latest iteration.
