LONDON / LOS ANGELES — Despite a ceremony overshadowed by a viral outburst, Ryan Coogler’s Southern Gothic thriller Sinners has officially cemented its status as a historic awards juggernaut. Following a record-breaking night at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards, the film is now the most-decorated production by a Black director in the history of the British Academy, surpassing the previous benchmark set by 12 Years a Slave.
A Landmark Night at the BAFTAs
While Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another took home the most trophies overall, Sinners carved out a path of historic “firsts”:
- Original Screenplay: Ryan Coogler became the first Black writer to win the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay. In his acceptance speech, Coogler dedicated the win to writers who “draw on love and pain” to fill the blank page.
- Supporting Actress: Wunmi Mosaku received a thunderous standing ovation for her win. Her portrayal of a “hoodoo practitioner” has made her a frontrunner for the upcoming Academy Awards.
- Original Score: Ludwig Göransson secured the film’s third win of the night. Coogler, accepting on his behalf, joked that the composer was absent because he was busy scoring “a little independent film called The Odyssey.”
The Momentum Towards the Oscars
The BAFTA success follows a dominant showing at the Critics Choice Awards, where Sinners led with 17 nominations and secured key wins in:
- Best Casting and Ensemble (Francine Maisler)
- Best Score
- Best Young Actor/Actress (Miles Caton)
- Best Original Screenplay
With 16 Academy Award nominations already in hand, industry analysts suggest that Sinners is the clear favorite to challenge One Battle After Another for Best Picture on March 16.
Overcoming Controversy
The film’s success comes amidst a heated national debate following an incident during the BAFTA telecast. While stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage, an audience member with Tourette syndrome involuntarily shouted a racial slur.
While the incident sparked a firestorm on social media, the focus within the industry has remained on the film’s unprecedented box office and critical crossover. Having grossed over $368 million worldwide, Sinners has proven that original, Black-led genre films can dominate both the cultural zeitgeist and the awards circuit.
”I come from a community that loves me… they made me believe I could be a writer.” — Ryan Coogler, during his historic BAFTA acceptance.
