LONDON — Just as the dust settles on the BBC’s high-profile split from Disney+, a new heavyweight contender has entered the conversation for the future of Doctor Who: HBO.
In a series of recent interviews, including a sit-down with Deadline this week, BBC Director of Drama Lindsay Salt has sparked intense speculation by refusing to rule out a partnership with the American premium network. The move comes as the BBC looks for a new global streaming partner to help fund the ambitious vision for the long-running sci-fi series.
A New Era of Collaboration?
The timing of these rumors isn’t accidental. The BBC and HBO already share a burgeoning creative relationship, co-producing upcoming projects from breakout stars like Richard Gadd (Baby Reindeer) and Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You).
When asked directly if HBO could be the next home for the Doctor, Salt was tellingly open:
”We’ll wait and see how we figure it out. HBO have been great partners creatively. There’s a lot of stuff that is changing out there.”
Why HBO?
Industry analysts point to several factors that make HBO a “logical” successor to Disney+:
- The UK Launch: Max (formerly HBO Max) is scheduled to launch in the UK and Ireland on March 26, 2026. Having a “treasured brand” like Doctor Who as a flagship title would be a massive draw for new subscribers.
- Creative Pedigree: Known for high-budget, prestige dramas, HBO’s brand aligns well with the “cinematic” direction showrunner Russell T. Davies has taken the series in recently.
- Familiar Territory: Doctor Who previously lived on HBO Max in the US before the Disney deal, meaning a return would be a homecoming of sorts for the American audience.
The “Disney Split” Hangover
The urgency for a new partner follows the “implosion” of the Disney+ deal, which officially ends after two seasons and the upcoming 2026 spin-off The War Between the Land and the Sea. While the BBC has guaranteed that the show is “going nowhere” and will return for a 2026 Christmas Special, the lack of a long-term international funding partner has left fans nervous about future budgets.
What’s Next for the Doctor?
For now, the BBC is playing its cards close to its chest. Salt emphasized that “discussions haven’t even begun” on official funding for the next full season, with the current focus remaining on the 2026 special. However, with HBO’s UK launch just around the corner, the “timey-wimey” stars might be aligning for a major announcement later this year.
