SYDNEY – After nearly three years of silence since its initial announcement at Netflix’s TUDUM event, the high-octane Extraction franchise is officially locking and loading for its next chapter. Principal photography for Extraction 3 is scheduled to begin in June 2026, marking a major homecoming for its lead star and a shift in the series’ visual landscape.
A “Homecoming” Mission
While the first two installments took audiences through the humid streets of Dhaka and the freezing forests of Prague, the third entry will be anchored in Sydney, Australia. This move brings the production to the home turf of lead actor Chris Hemsworth, who returns as the seemingly unkillable black-ops mercenary Tyler Rake.
The production is expected to span four months, with a wrap date currently targeted for October 9, 2026. Insiders suggest that while Sydney serves as the primary base, the crew will also head to Europe during the summer months to capture international sequences, maintaining the franchise’s globe-trotting DNA.
The Creative Arsenal
Netflix is keeping the core team that turned the first two films into streaming juggernauts:
- Director: Sam Hargrave, the stunt-coordinator-turned-director, returns to helm the project. Known for his “oner” (unbroken) action sequences, Hargrave is expected to push the envelope even further after the 21-minute set piece in Extraction 2.
- Producers: Anthony and Joe Russo are back under their AGBO banner, with Joe Russo once again handling the script.
- Cinematography: In a significant move, Fraser Taggart—the cinematographer behind the recent Mission: Impossible films—has joined the crew, signaling an even more ambitious visual scale.
Expanding the “Extraction Universe”
Extraction 3 isn’t the only project on the horizon for the franchise. Netflix has officially confirmed plans to build a “Cinematic Action Universe” around Tyler Rake’s world:
- Mercenary: An eight-episode spin-off series starring Omar Sy is currently filming in North Africa.
- Tygo: A spin-off film set in the South Korean underworld starring Don Lee (Train to Busan) is also in development.
”We are hard at work on a story that explores the psychological aftermath of Rake’s missions while maintaining the trademark brutality fans expect.” — Joe Russo, Producer
When Can Fans Watch?
With filming concluding in late 2026 and the franchise’s history of extensive post-production for its complex stunts, a Summer or Fall 2027 release on Netflix is the most likely timeline.
