BURBANK, CA — The simulation is rebooting once again. Warner Bros. Motion Pictures has officially confirmed that a fifth installment of the groundbreaking Matrix franchise is in active development. In a significant shift for the series, the film will be the first not directed by either Lana or Lilly Wachowski.
Instead, the studio has tapped Drew Goddard—the Oscar-nominated writer of The Martian and director of The Cabin in the Woods—to write and direct the upcoming sequel.
The Return of Neo: What We Know
While the announcement has set the internet ablaze, the status of the franchise’s iconic stars remains the subject of intense speculation. Here is the current breakdown of the production:
- Keanu Reeves & Carrie-Anne Moss: As of March 2026, there is no official confirmation that Keanu Reeves (Neo) or Carrie-Anne Moss (Trinity) have signed on to the project. However, industry insiders and recent reports suggest that the “idea” pitched by Goddard involves bringing Reeves back into the fold.
- Reeves’ Condition: Historically, Keanu Reeves has stated he would only return for another film if Lana Wachowski was involved. While she isn’t directing, she has been confirmed as an Executive Producer, potentially clearing the way for the star’s return.
- The Director’s Vision: In a recent update from his “writing cave,” Drew Goddard confirmed the script is still being penned. Warner Bros. executives described Goddard’s pitch as a way to “advance the fantasy world without straying too far from what made the series a success.”
Production Timeline
Fans should prepare for a long wait before plugging back in. With the script still in the works and no official casting yet announced, a production start date has not been set.
Why Now?
The move comes after 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections received a polarizing reception and struggled at the box office (earning $160 million against a $190 million budget). Despite this, the Matrix remains one of Warner Bros.’ “crown jewel” IPs.
By bringing in Goddard—a filmmaker known for deconstructing genres—the studio appears to be betting on a fresh perspective to revitalize the high-concept sci-fi lore for a new generation.
”Drew came to us with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world,” said Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. President of Production.
