The 25th-anniversary revival of the legendary “cops and capes” procedural continues this week. Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming are back at Dark Horse Comics, pushing the boundaries of the Powers universe with a story that feels both nostalgic and dangerously new.
The Story So Far: “Fresh Powers, Fresh Problems”
In Powers 25 #7, the focus shifts to a volatile new faction: The Grand. This is a generation of “powers” who have no interest in the caped-crusader status quo of the past. They view themselves as enlightened emissaries, existing entirely above the laws and failures of the heroes who came before them.
However, being “enlightened” doesn’t make you immortal. When a member of The Grand—a Power named Krystal—is found dead in a parking garage under mysterious, “magical” circumstances, the fragile peace between the heroes and the law begins to shatter.
Issue Highlights
- The Christian Walker Powers Act: The legal and ethical nightmare of this new global bureaucracy is reaching a boiling point. Detectives Kutter and Moon are forced to navigate these new rules while investigating a murder that The Grand wants to handle internally.
- The Conflict: It’s a race against time. If the police and the Powers can’t agree on who has jurisdiction, the conspiracy behind Krystal’s death may consume the city before the first arrest is even made.
- The Art: Oeming’s iconic noir style remains the heartbeat of the series, utilizing heavy shadows and sharp silhouettes to ground the high-flying “magic shit” in a gritty, procedural reality.
