LOS ANGELES — The long-standing fan campaign to see Ryan Gosling trade his Barbie pink for a leather jacket and hellfire has reached a boiling point. While promoting his latest sci-fi epic, Project Hail Mary, Gosling confirmed that he has officially entered talks with Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to play the supernatural anti-hero Ghost Rider.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Gosling addressed the rumors that have trailed him since 2022. When asked point-blank if he had met with the MCU’s mastermind about the Spirit of Vengeance, Gosling didn’t dodge.
”Some discussions have been had,” Gosling told host Josh Horowitz. “It’s a complicated situation. But we keep hope alive.”
Why the Delay?
While the actor’s confirmation sent shockwaves through the Marvel fandom, the “complicated” nature of the deal suggests fans shouldn’t expect a motorcycle to roar onto the screen just yet. Industry insiders point to a few potential hurdles:
- Canon Conflicts: The character appeared previously in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (played by Gabriel Luna). Integrating a new version into the current MCU timeline—especially with Avengers: Secret Wars on the horizon—requires careful planning.
- Scheduling: Gosling is currently attached to several high-profile projects, including the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter.
- Creative Direction: Marvel is reportedly looking to anchor its supernatural “Midnight Sons” corner, and deciding whether Ghost Rider debuts in a solo film or a team-up project remains a key discussion point.
A Full-Circle Moment
The casting would be a poetic move for Gosling. His longtime partner, Eva Mendes, starred in the 2007 Ghost Rider film as Roxanne Simpson opposite Nicolas Cage.
”I’m just happy one of us got to do it,” Gosling joked during the interview. When pressed on why he is so singular in his focus on this specific character, the actor simply replied with his signature deadpan: “Just a feeling.”
What’s Next for the Spirit of Vengeance?
While no official contract has been signed, the public acknowledgement from both Gosling and Feige (who previously called Gosling “unbelievable”) suggests that the “complicated” talks are very much active.
