LOS ANGELES, CA — The East Hollywood branch of the Department of Motor Vehicles is officially shutting its doors. CBS announced Friday that it has canceled the freshman sitcom DMV, making it the latest casualty of the network’s 2026-2027 schedule shake-up.
The single-camera comedy, which premiered in October 2025, will conclude its run on May 11, 2026, with the Season 1 finale now serving as the series finale. The news came as part of a “Friday night purge” at the network, which also saw the cancellation of the Morris Chestnut-led medical drama Watson.
A Strong Start, a Shaky Finish
When DMV first hit the airwaves, it looked like a potential successor to workplace classics like The Office or Superstore.
- The Launch: The pilot debuted to an impressive 10.1 million multi-platform viewers, benefiting from a strong lead-in from The Neighborhood.
- The Slump: Despite the initial curiosity, the show struggled with audience retention. Recent episodes dropped to approximately 2.8 million live viewers, failing to capture the sustained “delayed viewing” numbers that CBS prioritizes for its comedy slate.
- Critical Reception: While critics praised the ensemble’s chemistry, the show maintained a “Middling” 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with some reviewers noting that the bureaucratic humor occasionally felt as stagnant as an actual DMV line.
- Harriet Dyer as Colette, the big-hearted driving examiner.
- Tim Meadows as Gregg, a misanthropic former English teacher.
- Tony Cavalero as Vic, a dim-witted former bouncer.
- Molly Kearney as Barbara, the overly optimistic branch manager.
- Alex Tarrant and Gigi Zumbado as Noa and Ceci.
- Eternally Yours: A high-concept romantic comedy.
- Tillbrooks: A family-centric sitcom gaining early internal traction.
- Cupertino: A new tech-legal drama starring Mike Colter, expected to take over a prime scripted slot.
Final Air Date
Fans of the East Hollywood crew have a few episodes left to say goodbye. The series finale will air on Monday, May 11, at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and will be available for streaming on Paramount+.
