HOLLYWOOD – In a move that signals a major pivot toward serious dramatic acting, Snoop Dogg has officially signed on to star in and produce the upcoming true-crime thriller God of the Rodeo. The legendary rapper described the project as “life-changing,” marking a significant departure from his usual laid-back, comedic screen persona.
The film is a high-profile collaboration between Snoop’s Death Row Pictures and cinematic heavyweight Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions.
The Story: Grit, Soul, and Survival
Based on acclaimed reporting by journalist Daniel Bergner, the film is set in 1967 against the brutal backdrop of Louisiana’s infamous Angola Prison—once known as the deadliest penitentiary in America.
- The Plot: The story follows “Buckkey” (played by Shia LaBeouf), an inmate serving a life sentence who seeks a sliver of redemption by participating in the prison’s inaugural inmate rodeo.
- The Reality: What begins as a hope for freedom quickly reveals itself as a grueling, blood-soaked spectacle designed to entertain the public and reinforce the warden’s absolute power.
- Snoop’s Role: While his specific character remains under wraps, director Rosalind Ross (Father Stu) promised a “completely transformative” performance that leans into “eccentricity, soul, and grit.”
A Death Row Takeover
Snoop Dogg isn’t just showing up for his lines. Through his Death Row Pictures banner, he is taking a hands-on approach to the production alongside partner Sara Ramaker.
”Linking up with Ridley Scott and Giannina Scott on God of the Rodeo is an honor,” Snoop said in a statement to Deadline. “Me and the team at Death Row Pictures are stepping in as producers, I’m acting in it, and Death Row Records is building the soundtrack—and this one’s got soul.”
Production Details
The film has already generated significant buzz for its “powerhouse” creative team:
- Director/Writer: Rosalind Ross
- Producers: Ridley Scott, Giannina Scott, Snoop Dogg, and Sara Ramaker.
- Filming Location: Principal photography is slated to begin this summer in Tulsa and Boley, Oklahoma, taking advantage of the state’s historic landscapes and film tax incentives.
- Timeline: Production is scheduled to run from June 15 through July 31, 2026.
Why It Matters
For fans used to seeing Snoop Dogg in comedies or hosting Olympic highlights, God of the Rodeo represents a “prestige” move. By partnering with the director of Gladiator and American Gangster, Snoop is positioning himself as a serious player in the dramatic space, following in the footsteps of rappers-turned-actors like Ice Cube and 50 Cent.
Giannina Scott praised the casting, calling Snoop “one of the most influential artists alive” whose presence brings “real cultural weight” to a story about resilience and American history.
