ROME — Hollywood heavyweights Denzel Washington and Antoine Fuqua are preparing to descend on Italy this summer to begin production on their highly anticipated historical epic, Hannibal.
The film, backed by Netflix, marks the sixth collaboration between the two-time Oscar winner and the acclaimed director, a partnership that famously began with 2001’s Training Day.
Production Details
According to industry reports confirmed in March 2026, filming is scheduled to commence in June 2026. The production will be headquartered at the legendary Cinecittà Studios in Rome, which recently hosted the duo for the filming of The Equalizer 3.
- Location Scouting: Pre-production is already underway, with Fuqua’s team scouting locations across Italy to recreate the rugged landscapes of the Second Punic War.
- The Script: The screenplay is penned by three-time Academy Award nominee John Logan, the writer behind other historical heavy-hitters like Gladiator and The Aviator.
- Cinematography: Three-time Oscar winner Robert Richardson (JFK, Hugo) is expected to serve as Director of Photography, ensuring a visual scale worthy of the Carthaginian general’s legacy.
The Legend of Hannibal Barca
The film will chronicle the life of Hannibal Barca, the brilliant military strategist who famously crossed the Alps with war elephants to strike at the heart of the Roman Republic.
A Decades-Old Passion Project
For Denzel Washington, portraying Hannibal is the realization of a project he first explored over 20 years ago. While the actor’s casting at age 71 has sparked minor debates online regarding historical accuracy—Hannibal was in his late 20s when he crossed the Alps—insiders suggest the film may utilize a non-linear narrative, possibly featuring a younger actor for flashback sequences or utilizing modern de-aging technology.
Collaboration History
This project continues one of modern cinema’s most reliable creative partnerships:
- Training Day (2001) – Earned Washington the Best Actor Oscar.
- The Equalizer (2014)
- The Magnificent Seven (2016)
- The Equalizer 2 (2018)
- The Equalizer 3 (2023)
- Hannibal (Filming 2026)
Before production kicks off in June, Fuqua is set to promote his latest directorial effort, the Michael Jackson biopic Michael, which hits international theaters on April 23, 2026.
