Martin Scorsese, the legendary filmmaker behind Taxi Driver, The Irishman, and Killers of the Flower Moon, has officially announced his next cinematic venture: What Happens at Night, a ghost story adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The film is based on Peter Cameron’s enigmatic novel of the same name and promises a chilling, atmospheric dive into grief, identity, and the uncanny.
A Dreamlike Descent into Mystery
The story follows an unnamed American couple who travel to a snowy, remote European town to adopt a child. The wife, battling cancer, grows increasingly frail, while her husband fears her illness may jeopardize the adoption. They check into a cavernous, nearly deserted hotel populated by a surreal cast of characters—a flamboyant chanteuse, a depraved businessman, and a charismatic faith healer. As the couple’s grip on reality loosens, the hotel becomes a mirror for their unraveling selves.
DiCaprio and Lawrence: A First-Time Pairing Under Scorsese
This marks the seventh collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, whose previous work together includes The Wolf of Wall Street and Shutter Island. For Lawrence, it’s her first time working with Scorsese as a director, though he produced her upcoming film Die, My Love. The pairing of these two Oscar winners adds star power to a project already rich with psychological intrigue.
Behind the Scenes: Apple and Studiocanal in Talks
Apple Original Films is in negotiations to finance and produce the film alongside Studiocanal, which acquired the rights to Cameron’s novel in 2023. Patrick Marber (Closer) has penned the screenplay, promising a layered, emotionally resonant adaptation. Production is tentatively slated to begin in January 2026.
A Return to Allegory and Atmosphere
Scorsese’s choice of material signals a return to the allegorical and atmospheric storytelling of Shutter Island, but with a more intimate, ghostly tone. The novel’s themes—illness, isolation, and the fragility of identity—offer fertile ground for Scorsese’s cinematic lens, especially with DiCaprio and Lawrence anchoring the emotional core.
As Scorsese continues to explore the boundaries of genre and human psychology, What Happens at Night may well become one of his most haunting and introspective works yet.
