In a year defined by bold originals, revitalized franchises, and strategic restraint, Warner Bros. has emerged as the first studio to cross the $4 billion mark at the global box office in 2025—a feat it last achieved in 2019, but with nearly twice the number of releases.
This year, Warner Bros. accomplished the milestone with just 11 theatrical titles, a sharp contrast to the 20 films it released six years ago. The studio’s leaner slate has proven more potent, generating $1.795 billion domestically and $2.2 billion internationally.
A Year of Strategic Wins
The studio’s success is rooted in a mix of high-performing IP and daring originals. James Gunn’s Superman not only reignited the DC Universe but also soared past $600 million worldwide. Meanwhile, Ryan Coogler’s vampire drama Sinners and Joseph Kosinski’s F1, starring Brad Pitt, proved that original storytelling still commands attention.
Warner Bros. also struck gold with Minecraft, transforming the beloved video game into a box office juggernaut. Horror fans flocked to Zach Cregger’s Weapons, which grossed $264 million globally on a modest $38 million budget, and The Conjuring: Last Rites became the franchise’s highest-grossing installment.
Dominating the Leaderboard
Nine of Warner Bros.’ 11 releases opened at No. 1, and the studio has claimed the top spot for 15 weekends this year—both domestically and worldwide. In a historic streak, seven consecutive films debuted with over $40 million, a record unmatched even by Disney’s five-title run last year.
New Line, Warner’s genre label, also set a record with five straight weekends at No. 1, underscoring the studio’s dominance across genres.
The Final Push
The studio’s final release of the year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, opened this weekend and is projected to add another $45 million globally. With $3.1 million already earned in Thursday previews, it’s a fitting capstone to a year of calculated risk and creative ambition.
Whether One Battle After Another can push Warner Bros. toward the elusive $5 billion mark remains uncertain. But even without it, the studio’s 2025 campaign stands as a masterclass in box office strategy—proof that fewer, smarter bets can yield blockbuster results.
