A Bright Light Gone Too Soon
Kelley Mack, the actress best known for her role as Addy in AMC’s The Walking Dead, has died at the age of 33 following a courageous battle with glioma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Her passing on August 2 in her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, was confirmed by her family, who shared that she died peacefully, surrounded by her mother and aunt.
Her death marks a somber moment for fans and colleagues alike, as tributes pour in for a performer whose talent, warmth, and creative spirit touched many.
Born Kelley Lynne Klebenow, Mack’s love for storytelling began early. A childhood gift, a mini video camera, sparked a lifelong passion for performance and filmmaking. After graduating from Hinsdale Central High School in 2010, she earned a degree in cinematography from Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts.
Her breakout role came in Season 9 of The Walking Dead, where she portrayed Addy, a teen survivor entangled in the harrowing “Whisperers” storyline. Though her character appeared in just five episodes, Mack’s performance resonated deeply with fans, praised for its emotional nuance and authenticity.
She went on to appear in Chicago Med as Penelope Jacobs and in 9-1-1, further cementing her presence in primetime drama. Her film credits include the psychological thriller Broadcast Signal Intrusion, the horror-comedy Delicate Arch, and the upcoming feature Universal, in which she also served as executive producer.
Mack’s talents extended beyond acting. She was a voice match for Hailee Steinfeld’s Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, and lent her voice to commercials for Budweiser, Herbal Essences, and Hyundai. She also collaborated with her mother on screenplays, including On The Black, a baseball drama inspired by her grandparents’ love story.
Her creative pursuits were matched by a deep commitment to emotional authenticity. Whether on set or in her writing, Mack approached storytelling as a sacred calling, one that allowed her to connect, inspire, and heal.
In September 2024, Mack publicly shared her diagnosis of diffuse midline glioma. Despite the physical toll, including loss of mobility due to spinal cord surgery, she remained resilient, undergoing radiation and physical therapy while continuing to promote her work.
Her final Instagram post in March reflected her enduring optimism: “Overall, this journey has not been easy, but things are getting better – improvements are tough to see when you’re in the thick of it. Thank you again and again for the support and prayers”.
Her family described her as “a bright, fervent light” who has since appeared to loved ones “in the form of butterflies.” A celebration of her life will be held in Ohio on August 16.
Kelley Mack is survived by her parents Kristen and Lindsay Klebenow, siblings Kathryn and Parker, grandparents Lois and Larry, and her boyfriend Logan. She leaves behind a body of work that continues to inspire, and a legacy defined not just by talent, but by grace, courage, and love.
Her story reminds us that even in the face of unimaginable hardship, art—and the human spirit—can shine brilliantly.
Rest in peace, Kelley. Your light endures.
