A New Chapter in the Spider-Verse Saga
Sony Pictures Animation is rumored to be expanding its acclaimed Spider-Verse franchise with two bold new entries: animated films centered on Venom and Spider-Woman. These developments come on the heels of the studio’s success with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequels, which have redefined superhero storytelling through dazzling visuals and emotionally rich narratives.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, both projects are in early development, though Sony has yet to make an official announcement.
The Spider-Woman project has been gestating since 2018, when Sony first teased a female-led spin-off featuring Gwen Stacy, Jessica Drew, and Silk. While details remain scarce, the renewed buzz suggests the studio is finally ready to bring these characters to the forefront.
Given the popularity of Gwen Stacy’s Spider-Woman in the Spider-Verse films, fans are hopeful that the new movie will build on her arc while introducing fresh perspectives from other Spider-Women across the multiverse.
Venom, one of Spider-Man’s most iconic adversaries, is also reportedly getting an animated makeover. Following the conclusion of Tom Hardy’s live-action trilogy with Venom: The Last Dance, Sony appears to be shifting gears creatively. The animated Venom film is rumored to be R-rated, with Seth Rogen attached as writer and producer.
Rogen’s previous work on adult-themed comic adaptations like The Boys and Invincible suggests a darker, more irreverent tone—potentially a perfect match for the chaotic energy of the symbiote. This pivot could reinvigorate the franchise, especially after diminishing box office returns from the live-action series.
It’s unclear whether these new films will adopt the signature animation style of the Spider-Verse trilogy or forge their own aesthetic. Either way, the move to animation opens up creative possibilities that live-action simply can’t match—from surreal symbiote transformations to multiversal mashups.
Sony’s animated Spider-Man universe has proven to be a fertile ground for innovation, and characters like Venom and Spider-Woman offer rich narrative potential. Whether exploring identity, power, or redemption, these films could push the boundaries of superhero storytelling once again.
