In a move that defies both narrative finality and fan expectations, John Wick 5 is officially in development—and yes, Keanu Reeves is back. Despite the apparent death of the titular assassin at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate confirmed at CinemaCon that Reeves will reprise his role, with director Chad Stahelski and producers Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee also returning.
A resurrection worthy of Baba Yaga
The announcement comes two years after Chapter 4 earned over $440 million worldwide, cementing the franchise’s status as a box office juggernaut. While the film ended with Wick collapsing from his injuries and a gravestone marking his supposed demise, fans never saw a death certificate—and Hollywood rarely lets a lucrative legend rest.
Adam Fogelson, chair of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, emphasized the creative integrity behind the decision: “Keanu, Chad, Basil, and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world.” Producers Iwanyk and Lee echoed this, calling it “so important to get this story right and give John’s story the proper next step.”
The Wick universe expands
Reeves’ return isn’t limited to Chapter 5. He’ll also appear in Ballerina, a spinoff starring Ana de Armas, set for release on June 6, 2025. Additionally, Donnie Yen will reprise his role as Caine in another spinoff he’s directing, and an anime prequel series is in development, with Reeves lending his voice.
This expansion signals Lionsgate’s commitment to building a John Wick Universe, with multiple narrative threads and stylistic variations. It’s a strategy that mirrors other cinematic universes, but with a distinct noir-meets-ballet brutality that fans have come to love.
What might Chapter 5 explore?
While plot details remain under wraps, the creative team’s emphasis on freshness suggests a thematic pivot. Will Wick confront the consequences of his resurrection? Will the High Table retaliate? Or will the film explore legacy, mentorship, and the cost of survival in a world that refuses to let its ghosts rest?
Whatever direction it takes, John Wick 5 promises to be more than just another sequel—it’s a resurrection, a reckoning, and a chance to redefine one of action cinema’s most iconic antiheroes.
