Axis Studios, once a cornerstone of Scotland’s animation industry, has officially entered administration, marking the end of a 25-year legacy that spanned film, television, and video games. The studio’s collapse comes despite recent acclaim for its work on Eyes of Wakanda, a Marvel spinoff that topped Disney+ charts and earned a 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
A legacy built on global IPs
Founded in 2000, Axis Studios became known for its distinctive visual style and high-end animation work. It contributed to major franchises including Halo, League of Legends, Gears of War, and Netflix’s Love, Death & Robots. The studio’s hand-painted aesthetic for Eyes of Wakanda—inspired by contemporary African-American artists—was hailed as one of its finest achievements.
But behind the scenes, Axis was struggling. The studio operated with a lean portfolio, often juggling just one or two large-scale contracts at a time. This left it vulnerable to cash-flow gaps, especially as international commissions declined post-pandemic and production delays mounted during the 2023 Hollywood strikes.
Financial unraveling
By mid-2024, Axis reportedly began deferring contractor payments and was unable to meet payroll obligations. Bankruptcy filings revealed debts exceeding $2.5 million, including $608,000 owed to 151 former employees—many of whom are unlikely to be compensated.
Despite securing a $44,000 payment from Sony’s Guerilla Games division for pre-insolvency work, the amount was a drop in the ocean compared to the studio’s liabilities.
Impact on the industry
Axis’s closure leaves a significant void in the UK’s animation landscape. Known for its ability to deliver blockbuster visuals on modest budgets, the studio was a go-to partner for global entertainment giants. Its downfall underscores the precarious economics of independent animation houses, especially those reliant on sporadic high-value contracts.
The fate of Eyes of Wakanda Season 2 remains uncertain. While Marvel may seek another studio to continue the series, fans lament the loss of Axis’s signature style. As one Reddit user put it, “That’s a shame—they did great work.”
Axis Studios’ story is a cautionary tale of creative brilliance undone by economic turbulence. Its legacy, however, will live on in the stunning visuals and unforgettable worlds it helped bring to life.
