In a surprise leadership shakeup, HarperCollins UK has announced the resignation of longtime CEO Charlie Redmayne, with Kate Elton stepping in as interim CEO. The move, disclosed on October 7, 2025, marks the end of Redmayne’s influential tenure and signals a new chapter for one of the UK’s leading publishing houses.
A Decade of Leadership Ends
Redmayne, who first joined HarperCollins UK in 2008 as group digital director, left briefly to head J.K. Rowling’s digital venture Pottermore before returning in 2013 to take the helm as CEO. Over his twelve-year leadership, he steered the company through digital transformation, market shifts, and the evolving landscape of global publishing. No reason was given for his departure, and Redmayne has not issued a public statement.
Kate Elton: A Publisher with Vision
Kate Elton, previously group managing director of HarperCollins UK’s Adult Commercial Divisions, has been appointed interim CEO. She will now sit on the global executive committee and oversee operations in the UK and Ireland, reporting directly to HarperCollins Worldwide CEO Brian Murray. Elton’s remit includes oversight of major imprints such as HarperFiction, HarperNonFiction, Avon, HQ, Mills & Boon, and Pavilion.
Murray praised Elton’s leadership, calling her “an inspiring publisher” with “a deep understanding of the industry and the HarperCollins business.” He credited her with fostering a culture of collaboration and innovation, noting her success in guiding the adult commercial divisions to new heights.
Elton, who joined HarperCollins in 2011 after 15 years at Random House, expressed gratitude and excitement about her new role. “It is a great privilege to be asked to lead HarperCollins UK,” she said. “I’ve been enormously proud to be part of the remarkable HarperCollins team for the last 14 years—it’s a genuine honor and joy to work with our wonderful community of authors, and with the talented, creative teams who bring their work to readers around the world”.
What’s Next for HarperCollins UK?
While Elton’s appointment is currently interim, HarperCollins has stated that a permanent successor will be named “in due course.” In the meantime, HarperCollins India and Australia/New Zealand divisions will report directly to Murray, reflecting a broader realignment of international leadership.
This transition comes at a pivotal moment for the publishing industry, as companies navigate post-pandemic consumer behavior, digital disruption, and shifting global markets. Elton’s track record suggests a steady hand and a forward-looking approach—qualities that may define HarperCollins UK’s next era.
