Despite swirling fan excitement, director Sam Raimi has clarified that Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire is not officially in development—yet. While speculation has intensified following Maguire’s return in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Raimi says he’s not currently working on a new installment, though he remains open to the idea.
Raimi Addresses the Buzz
At WonderCon, Raimi told CBR, “I’ve read the rumors. I love Tobey. I love Spider-Man. But I’m not actually working on it yet”. This statement comes amid growing fan campaigns and online chatter urging Sony and Marvel to revive the original trilogy’s storyline, which was left unresolved after Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
Raimi’s comments suggest that while no formal talks are underway, the door isn’t closed. “I haven’t heard anything from Marvel or Columbia Pictures,” he added, “but I’m always open to the possibility”.
A Revival in the Works?
Adding fuel to the fire, The Batman Part II co-writer Mattson Tomlin has expressed interest in helping get Spider-Man 4 off the ground. Tomlin reportedly wants to collaborate with Raimi to bring Maguire’s version of Peter Parker back to the big screen.
The idea gained traction after No Way Home grossed over $1 billion globally, proving that audiences still have a strong appetite for Maguire’s portrayal of the web-slinger. Fans have since launched petitions and social media campaigns calling for a continuation of Raimi’s original arc.
A Legacy Worth Revisiting
Raimi’s trilogy helped define the modern superhero genre, blending emotional depth with comic-book spectacle. The abandoned Spider-Man 4 was once slated for a 2011 release, with villains like Vulture and Black Cat rumored to appear. Though those plans were shelved, the legacy endures—and so does the hope.
For now, Spider-Man 4 remains a dream deferred. But with Raimi’s openness and fan enthusiasm at an all-time high, the possibility of a reunion between Raimi and Maguire is far from out of reach.
