Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter is set to headline and co-produce a new musical film inspired by Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, with acclaimed filmmaker Lorene Scafaria attached to write and direct. The project, currently untitled, is in development at Universal Pictures and promises a bold, contemporary reimagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic tale.
Carpenter, fresh off six Grammy nominations for her seventh studio album Man’s Best Friend, will make her major studio lead debut with this film. The project marks a significant milestone in her career, blending her musical prowess with her growing presence in Hollywood. While she has previously appeared in films like Tall Girl 2 and The Hate U Give, this marks her first time anchoring a major motion picture.
Scafaria, best known for directing Hustlers and her work on Succession, brings her signature blend of emotional depth and sharp wit to the project. She will direct from her own script, continuing her streak of female-led, genre-bending narratives.
The musical is being produced by Marc Platt through Marc Platt Productions—also behind Universal’s upcoming Wicked: For Good—alongside Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton of Alloy Entertainment. Carpenter will also produce under her At Last Productions banner, a company she launched in 2020 when the project was originally in development at Netflix.
While plot details remain under wraps, sources suggest this version will not be a literal adaptation but rather a stylized, emotionally resonant take on Carroll’s world. Earlier iterations hinted at a music festival backdrop dubbed “Wonderland,” though it’s unclear if that concept remains in the current version.
The film is being overseen at Universal by Ryan Jones and Jacqueline Garell, with Katie McNicol managing the project for Marc Platt Productions.
With Carpenter’s star power and Scafaria’s storytelling finesse, this Alice in Wonderland-inspired musical is shaping up to be one of Universal’s most anticipated projects. Whether it leans into whimsy, rebellion, or reinvention, audiences can expect a journey down the rabbit hole unlike any before.
