Detective John Luther is back—and this time, he’s not alone. Netflix has officially confirmed a new Luther movie is in the works, reuniting Idris Elba with Ruth Wilson, who reprises her fan-favorite role as the brilliant and dangerous Alice Morgan.
What We Know So Far
– Title & Release: The film is currently untitled and in pre-production. Filming is set to begin in early 2026.
– Plot Tease: A new wave of brutal, seemingly random murders strikes London. Luther, who has been off the grid, is “secretly called back into service”—but with enemies on all sides, saving the city may come at a steep cost.
– Returning Cast:
– Idris Elba as DCI John Luther
– Ruth Wilson as Alice Morgan, returning after her absence in 2023’s Luther: The Fallen Sun
– Dermot Crowley as DSU Martin Schenk
– Creative Team:
– Jamie Payne returns as director, having helmed The Fallen Sun and several episodes of the original BBC series.
– Neil Cross, the creator of Luther, is once again writing the script.
Why This Matters
Ruth Wilson’s return is a major draw for longtime fans. Her character, Alice Morgan—a seductive, psychopathic genius—was a defining presence in the original series but was notably absent from the 2023 film. Her reunion with Luther promises a volatile, emotionally charged dynamic that could reignite the franchise’s most compelling tension.
Director Jamie Payne called the script “a wonderfully dark tale” and expressed excitement at reuniting the original trio. “It’s a true joy to be back on the streets of Lutherland,” he said.
With its signature blend of psychological intensity, moral ambiguity, and noir atmosphere, the new Luther film is shaping up to be a must-watch for fans of British crime drama.
