FX’s Shōgun Season 2 begins filming in January with returning stars and fresh faces
FX’s Emmy-winning historical drama Shōgun is officially returning for a second season, with production set to begin in January 2026 in Vancouver. Following the global success of Season 1, which adapted James Clavell’s epic novel, the new season will chart an original storyline set a decade later, expanding the saga of feudal Japan and its entangled foreign visitors.
Returning cast members include:
– Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Yoshii Toranaga
– Cosmo Jarvis as English pilot John Blackthorne
– Fumi Nikaidô as Ochiba
– Shinnosuke Abe as Buntaro
– Hiroto Kanai as Omi
– Yoriko Dôguchi as Kiri
– Tommy Bastow as Alvito
– Yuko Miyamoto as Gin

– Yuka Kouri as Kiku
New cast members joining the ensemble:
– Asami Mizukawa as Aya
– Masataka Kubota as Hyūga
– Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu

The second season promises to delve deeper into political intrigue, shifting alliances, and the personal reckonings of its central characters. With no sequel novel to draw from, FX has confirmed the story will be entirely original, allowing the writers to explore new dimensions of Toranaga’s rule and Blackthorne’s assimilation into Japanese society.
Actor Takehiro Hira, who portrayed Ishido Kazunari in Season 1, hinted at his character’s fate in a recent interview, suggesting an “honourable death” may await him, though fans speculate he could return in flashbacks or spiritual visions.
Season 2 will stream on FX and Hulu in the U.S., and internationally on Disney+, continuing the show’s global reach and critical acclaim. With its lush production design, complex characters, and philosophical depth, Shōgun remains one of the most ambitious period dramas on television.
