Netflix is officially moving forward with a live‑action Gears of War movie, with acclaimed action director David Leitch attached and Dune screenwriter Jon Spaihts penning the script.
Netflix has confirmed that the long‑awaited Gears of War adaptation is finally in motion. The streaming giant is developing a live‑action feature film based on the blockbuster video game franchise, alongside an animated series set in the same universe.
The movie will be directed by David Leitch, best known for John Wick, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2. His production partner Kelly McCormick is also on board, bringing their 87North banner’s signature high‑octane style to the project. The script is being written by Jon Spaihts, whose credits include Dune and Doctor Strange, signaling a serious approach to the film’s world‑building and epic scale.
The Gears of War franchise, launched in 2006 by Epic Games and later developed by The Coalition, has sold over 40 million copies worldwide. Set on the war‑torn planet of Sera, the story follows Delta Squad, led by disgraced sergeant Marcus Fenix, as they battle the monstrous subterranean Locust Horde. Its mix of brutal combat, cinematic storytelling, and themes of survival and brotherhood made it one of Xbox’s most iconic series.
Fans have been waiting for a film adaptation for nearly two decades. Early attempts date back to 2007, when New Line Cinema purchased the rights, but the project stalled. Netflix revived the idea in 2022, announcing plans for both a movie and series. Now, with Leitch and Spaihts attached, the adaptation is closer than ever to reality.
While casting has not yet been announced, speculation is already swirling online about who will embody Marcus Fenix and the rest of Delta Squad. The creative team has hinted at a gritty, R‑rated tone, aiming to capture the franchise’s visceral combat and emotional depth.
No release date has been set, but industry insiders suggest production could begin once Spaihts delivers a final draft. For now, fans can celebrate that the gears are finally turning on one of gaming’s most anticipated adaptations.
