Hollywood heartthrob Austin Butler is in early negotiations to take on the iconic role of Detective Sonny Crockett in Universal Pictures’ upcoming Miami Vice reboot, directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick, F1). If confirmed, Butler would join Michael B. Jordan, who is also in talks to play Crockett’s partner, Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs.
The film marks a fresh cinematic take on the stylish 1980s TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Michael Mann. Originally starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, Miami Vice became a cultural touchstone for its pastel suits, synth-heavy soundtrack, and gritty portrayal of Miami’s criminal underworld. The franchise was previously adapted for the big screen in 2006, with Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx in the lead roles.
Butler, who earned critical acclaim and an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men. His recent credits include Masters of the Air, Dune: Part Two, and The Bikeriders, showcasing his range across period drama, sci-fi, and action.
The reboot is slated for release on August 6, 2027, and will be penned by Andor Emmy-winner Dan Gilroy alongside two-time Oscar nominee Eric Singer (American Hustle, Top Gun: Maverick). Kosinski will produce the film with Dylan Clark (The Batman).
If the casting is finalised, Butler and Jordan will portray undercover detectives navigating Miami’s high-stakes world of narcotics, corruption, and glamour—a dynamic duo poised to bring new energy to a franchise steeped in legacy.
Universal has yet to confirm final casting, but industry insiders suggest the studio is keen to lock in Butler and Jordan as its leading pair. With Kosinski at the helm and a powerhouse writing team in place, the Miami Vice reboot is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated action thrillers of the decade.
