HOLLYWOOD, CA — The Marvel Cinematic Universe is preparing to take its most grounded nation to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that Black Panther 3 is in active development, with director Ryan Coogler returning to helm a story that will reportedly shift Wakanda’s focus from Earth-bound politics to a fully cosmic scale.
Following the events of Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and the upcoming Secret Wars, the third installment—tentatively titled Black Panther: Shadows of Wakanda or Intergalactic Empire by insiders—is expected to draw inspiration from Ta-Nehisi Coates’ acclaimed comic run, which introduced the Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda.
Key Production Details
While Marvel has kept specific plot points under lock and key, several major updates have surfaced as of early 2026:
- Release Window: Ryan Coogler recently confirmed to The New York Times that the film is eyeing a February 2028 release.
- Director & Cast: Ryan Coogler is currently writing the script. Letitia Wright is set to return as Shuri, and in a massive casting update, Denzel Washington has confirmed that a role is being written specifically for him.
- Filming: Rumors suggest principal photography is slated to begin in June 2026 in London.
From Vibranium Mines to Star Systems
The shift to a cosmic direction marks a pivotal evolution for the franchise. While the first two films explored isolationism and the weight of grief on Earth, the third chapter is rumored to explore the five galaxies conquered by a space-faring Wakandan splinter group in the distant past.
Why the Shift?
Industry analysts suggest that following the Multiverse Saga, Marvel is looking to “re-ground” its heroes by giving them specialized domains. For the Black Panther, this means moving beyond the borders of Africa and into the stars where Vibranium’s true origins can be explored.
”We’re working on it hard,” Coogler told Deadline during a recent panel. “It’s the next movie. We want to respect the legacy while showing that Wakanda’s influence doesn’t just stop at the horizon.”
