BURBANK, CA — Following a string of directorial departures, Warner Bros. is reportedly looking to its most reliable multi-hyphenate to save the long-gestating Ocean’s Eleven prequel. Bradley Cooper is in active talks to write, direct, and star in the 1960s heist caper, stepping in after Twisters director Lee Isaac Chung exited the project earlier this month due to creative differences.
The film, which has been in development since 2022, is set to pair Cooper with Margot Robbie, who remains attached as the lead and a producer under her LuckyChap banner.
A High-Stakes Shift
Cooper was originally linked to the project as an actor in late 2025, reportedly replacing Ryan Gosling. However, the scope of his involvement has expanded significantly. If the deal closes, this will be Cooper’s fourth directorial effort, following the critical and commercial successes of A Star Is Born, Maestro, and the recently released Is This Thing On?.
Industry sources suggest that by handing Cooper the keys to the script and the director’s chair, Warner Bros. hopes to stabilize a production that has already seen two high-profile filmmakers—Jay Roach and Lee Isaac Chung—walk away.
What We Know About the Prequel
While plot details are being kept in a digital vault, the established framework for the film includes:
- The Setting: A stylish, 1960s European heist heavily inspired by the original 1960 Ocean’s 11 and the glamour of the Monaco Grand Prix.
- The Rumor: Long-standing reports suggest Cooper and Robbie may be playing the parents of Danny Ocean (the character made famous by George Clooney).
- The Script: Originally penned by Carrie Solomon, the story is described as an “epic love story” disguised as a high-stakes robbery involving precious diamonds.
The “Ocean’s” Renaissance
The prequel is just one half of a massive franchise revival at Warner Bros. Simultaneously, the studio is moving forward with “Ocean’s Fourteen,” which aims to reunite the original 2001 cast, including Clooney, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts, under the direction of David Leitch.
By securing Cooper for the prequel, the studio aims to begin filming by late 2026, potentially setting up a blockbuster “Summer of Ocean’s” in 2027 or 2028.
”Bradley has a specific shorthand with Warner Bros.,” noted one anonymous producer. “He knows how to deliver prestige that actually makes money. For a franchise that’s all about cool, he’s the safest bet they have.”
