While there has been no official confirmation from Warner Bros. or the actress herself, the internet is currently abuzz with a bold casting rumor: Cynthia Erivo is reportedly being considered to play the Persian God-King Xerxes in a new 300 reboot.
The rumor suggests a significant creative departure from the 2006 Zack Snyder original, which featured Rodrigo Santoro in the role. Here is the breakdown of the current reports.
A New Vision for the God-King
According to industry insiders, the rumored reboot—which is being developed as a high-budget TV series for Max—aims to lean further into the “mythological and gender-fluid” descriptions of Xerxes found in the original Frank Miller graphic novel.
Cynthia Erivo, fresh off her massive success in Wicked, is reportedly the top choice for the role. Sources suggest the production is looking for an actor who can embody the ethereal, larger-than-life presence of a “living deity” while bringing a different physical energy than the previous iteration.
Why Erivo?
The casting makes sense when looking at Erivo’s recent career trajectory and her reputation for “transformative” acting:
- The “Villain” Arc: Erivo has already shown an affinity for iconic, misunderstood figures (Elphaba) and is set to play all 23 roles—including the titular vampire—in a West End production of Dracula later this year.
- Androgynous Grandeur: The role of Xerxes requires a specific blend of regal arrogance and otherworldly beauty, a balance Erivo has mastered in her fashion and stage presence.
- Vocal Power: In the original films, Xerxes’ voice was digitally altered to sound like “rolling thunder.” Given Erivo’s Tony-winning vocal range, producers are reportedly interested in a performance that uses her natural resonance to create a similarly commanding effect.
Fan and Critical Reaction
As with any major reboot of a cult classic, the news has divided the fanbase:
- Supporters point to Erivo’s undeniable talent and the fact that the “God-King” version of Xerxes is already a fictionalized, almost supernatural character that isn’t strictly bound by historical realism.
- Skeptics argue that the 2006 film’s aesthetic is inseparable from its specific cast and worry that a “gender-flipped” or “reimagined” Xerxes might stray too far from the source material’s gritty tone.
What’s Next for 300?
The 300 series is currently in the early stages of development at Warner Bros. Television. Original director Zack Snyder and producer Deborah Snyder are reportedly in talks to return as executive producers, though a showrunner has yet to be officially named.
If the rumors hold true, this would be Erivo’s third major “reimagined” role in as many years, following her upcoming 2025 turn as Jesus in a special production of Jesus Christ Superstar and her multi-character Dracula run.
Note: As of now, this remains a casting rumor. No contracts have been signed, and Marvel fans are also still holding out hope for the other big rumor: Erivo playing Storm in the MCU X-Men reboot.
