HOLLYWOOD – The John Wick universe is expanding its reach into the heart of Hong Kong. Lionsgate has officially greenlit production for the untitled spin-off centered on Caine, the blind assassin portrayed by martial arts legend Donnie Yen.
In a groundbreaking move for the franchise, Yen will not only reprise his role as the fan-favorite killer but will also step behind the camera to direct the feature. Cameras are scheduled to begin rolling in April 2026, with production splitting time between Europe and Hong Kong.
A Tale of Revenge and Redemption
The film picks up immediately following the high-stakes events of John Wick: Chapter 4. Having been freed from his obligations to the High Table, Caine’s journey toward a quiet life with his daughter is derailed by the shadows of his past.
The plot is expected to lean heavily into the “cycle of revenge” teased in the Chapter 4 post-credits scene. Rina Sawayama is confirmed to return as Akira, the former Osaka Continental concierge who has vowed to hunt down Caine for the death of her father, Shimazu Koji.
”What drew me to Caine is the contradiction,” Yen said in an official statement. “He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made.”

- Filming Locations: Primary photography begins in Europe this April, with the production moving to Hong Kong in late June for location shooting at “representative” spots like the Big Buddha and Star Ferry Pier.

Expanding the “Wick-Verse”
The announcement comes as Lionsgate continues to build out the world of the High Table. While the Ana de Armas-led Ballerina saw a mixed critical reception, the studio is betting big on Yen’s star power and directorial vision to carry the franchise forward.
With a script penned by Mattson Tomlin—who is also currently working on The Batman Part II—the Caine spin-off is being positioned as a more emotionally grounded, character-driven entry in the series.
