In a move that has sent shockwaves through both Hollywood and ancient Egypt, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is reportedly in talks to return to his roots. Rumors are swirling that the star will reprise his role as the Scorpion King in the newly greenlit The Mummy 4.
This potential reunion comes on the heels of the massive news that original leads Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz have officially entered discussions to return for a legacy sequel, directed by the Scream (2022) duo Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett).
A Full-Circle Reunion
For Johnson, this return is more than just a blockbuster paycheck—it’s a homecoming. The Scorpion King was Johnson’s very first film role in 2001’s The Mummy Returns, a part he has often credited with launching his record-breaking film career.
“I’m honored and excited to bring the character to a new generation,” Johnson previously noted regarding separate reboot plans, but the recent momentum on The Mummy 4 suggests he may instead rejoin his original co-stars for a massive cinematic event.
What We Know So Far
The project is being described as a legacy sequel that will reportedly ignore the events of 2008’s Tomb of the Dragon Emperor and serve as a direct follow-up to the core O’Connell family saga.
Director: Radio Silence (Bettinelli-Olpin & Gillett)

Redeeming the CGI Legacy
One of the most exciting prospects of Johnson’s return is the chance for technical redemption. The original Scorpion King monster from 2001 has become an internet legend for its dated CGI. Fans are already buzzing at the prospect of seeing a modern, high-fidelity version of the warrior Mathayus—or perhaps a version of the character that allows Johnson to appear in his human form alongside Fraser’s Rick O’Connell.
The chemistry between Fraser and Johnson remains strong behind the scenes. Johnson has frequently praised Fraser for “taking a chance” on him when he was just a professional wrestler with no acting experience, calling Fraser the man who “changed my life.”
Two Mummies on the Horizon?
While fans celebrate the O’Connell family reunion, Universal is playing a “double-track” strategy. A separate, horror-leaning reboot titled The Resurrected (directed by Lee Cronin) is also in development for 2026. However, it is the Fraser-led Mummy 4 that is capturing the lion’s share of public excitement.
With pre-production ramping up and the script being penned by David Coggeshall, the sands of the Sahara are once again shifting.
