LOS ANGELES — Fresh off the billion-dollar success of Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds is reportedly looking to double down on the mutant mayhem. According to industry reports and sources close to the actor, Reynolds is in the early stages of developing a new treatment for an ensemble film that would officially pair Deadpool with a core team of X-Men.
The project, which is being developed under Reynolds’ Maximum Effort banner, represents a significant shift in strategy for the Merc with a Mouth. Unlike previous solo outings, this film is rumored to place Deadpool in a “supporting” or “outsider” role to allow the X-Men characters to take center stage in unexpected ways.
Key Details of the Project
While Marvel Studios has not officially greenlit the script, the momentum behind Reynolds following the 2024 blockbuster season makes the project a near-certainty for the MCU’s “Mutant Era.”
The Lineup: Reynolds is reportedly writing for a small, tight-knit group of three to four X-Men. Speculation is high that this could finally be the long-awaited “X-Force” adaptation fans have craved since Deadpool 2.
The “Supporting” Merc: In a recent interview with Time, Reynolds hinted that Deadpool works best when he has a “straight man” to play against. “If Deadpool becomes a card-carrying X-Man, the journey is over,” Reynolds noted. “He needs to be the wrench in the gears.”
The Connection: This project is reportedly separate from the primary MCU X-Men reboot currently being written by Michael Lesslie and directed by Jake Schreier (Thunderbolts*).
Bridging the Fox and MCU Eras
The film is expected to serve as a bridge between the legacy characters of the Fox universe and the new iterations being introduced in the Sacred Timeline. Sources suggest the script may include a mix of returning favorites—potentially Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine or Channing Tatum’s Gambit—alongside brand-new MCU mutants.
“Ryan is more passionate about the storytelling than the acting at this stage,” a source close to the production told The Hollywood Reporter. “He wants to be the architect of how these worlds finally collide.”
What’s Next for Reynolds?
While Reynolds “tinkers” with the Deadpool/X-Men script, his 2025 schedule remains packed:
Animal Friends: An R-rated live-action/animated road trip comedy co-starring Jason Momoa (August 2025).
Mayday: An action-adventure film for Apple TV+ currently in post-production.
Non-Marvel Project: Reynolds recently confirmed he is writing a separate, non-superhero film specifically for himself, Hugh Jackman, and director Shawn Levy.
