BURBANK, CA — One of the most bone-chilling horror films of the last decade is officially getting the Hollywood treatment. Warner Bros. has tapped Noah Hawley—the visionary mind behind Fargo, Legion, and the hit series Alien: Earth—to direct and produce a English-language reimagining of the 2017 Argentinian supernatural sensation, Terrified (Aterrados).
The project, announced Tuesday, April 7, 2026, rescues the remake from nearly eight years of development limbo. It was previously attached to Guillermo del Toro and Fox Searchlight back in 2018, but that iteration never moved into production.
A Partnership with the Original Visionary
In a move that has reassured fans of the original film, Hawley is developing the project in close partnership with Demián Rugna, the writer and director of the 2017 masterpiece. Rugna, whose profile skyrocketed further in 2023 with the release of the disturbing When Evil Lurks, expressed his support for the new creative direction.
”After two attempts and eight years developing those previous tries… I have decided to leave my baby in the best hands,” Rugna said in a statement to Screen Anarchy. “I’ll rest in peace.”
The Nightmare in the Neighborhood
The reimagining will stay true to the core premise that made the original a cult classic. The story centers on a residential neighborhood in Buenos Aires where a series of gruesome, inexplicable supernatural events take place.
- The Plot: A police officer and a team of paranormal researchers are brought in to investigate “demon infestations” that leak between our world and another.
- The Style: Known for his meticulous attention to atmosphere and psychological tension in Fargo and Alien: Earth, Hawley is expected to lean into the more “nihilistic” and “relentless” horror elements that Rugna pioneered.
Production Context: The “Hawley Boom”
Hawley’s move to direct a horror feature comes on the heels of his massive success with Season 1 of Alien: Earth, which debuted on Hulu in August 2025 to critical acclaim. While Hawley is currently prepping for the second season of the Alien prequel, Terrified is expected to be his next major cinematic focus.
The “New Age” of Horror Remakes
The announcement highlights a growing trend of major studios tapping prestige TV creators to helm “elevated” horror properties. With Warner Bros. looking for a successor to The Conjuring universe’s box-office dominance, a Hawley-led Terrified represents a shift toward more experimental, high-concept scares.
As of Wednesday morning, no casting has been announced, but fans are already speculating on who will fill the roles of the doomed paranormal specialists. Given Hawley’s track record of attracting top-tier talent, expectations for the ensemble are sky-high.
