LONDON – Production on Amazon MGM Studios’ highly anticipated Tomb Raider series has been abruptly “paused” after lead actress Sophie Turner sustained an injury on set.
The 30-year-old Game of Thrones alumna, who was cast as the iconic adventurer Lara Croft late last year, reportedly suffered a back injury during a physically demanding sequence. The studio confirmed the news on Monday, March 30, 2026, stating that the hiatus is a “precautionary measure” to ensure Turner’s full recovery.
A “Grueling” Role Takes Its Toll
Filming for the series, which is being spearheaded by Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, began in January. Since then, Turner has been vocal about the intense physical preparation required for the role, involving eight hours of training a day, five days a week.
Insiders suggest that the current setback is linked to a pre-existing back condition that was exacerbated by the long hours and high-impact stunts required on set.
”Sophie has been throwing herself into the role, but the grueling physicality of being Lara Croft has meant she has pushed her body too far,” a source told The Sun.
Impact on Production
Amazon MGM Studios issued a brief statement to downplay fears of a long-term delay:
- Current Status: Production is officially on a “brief pause.”
- Estimated Timeline: Sources indicate Turner could return to set within two weeks.
- The Crew: Production staff and crew members are reportedly being paid during the hiatus while preparatory work continues in the interim.
High Stakes for the Franchise
The Tomb Raider series is one of Amazon’s most ambitious projects to date, featuring a star-studded supporting cast including Sigourney Weaver as Evelyn Wallis and Jason Isaacs as Lara’s uncle, Atlas DeMornay.
This live-action adaptation is the first time the character has returned to the screen since Alicia Vikander’s 2018 film. With Waller-Bridge’s reputation for sharp, character-driven writing, expectations are incredibly high for Turner to deliver a definitive version of the globetrotting archaeologist.
