LOS ANGELES, CA — In a move that has sent shockwaves through the horror community, Warner Bros. Pictures has officially announced that Mike Flanagan will write and direct a new feature film adaptation of Stephen King’s legendary novella, The Mist.
The project, which was confirmed on February 10, 2026, marks the fifth collaboration between the filmmaker and the “Master of Horror.” Flanagan, known for his emotionally resonant and character-driven approach to the genre, is currently one of the most prolific adaptors of King’s work, following the success of Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and the recently acclaimed The Life of Chuck.
A Fresh Take on a Dark Classic
Originally published in the 1980 anthology Dark Forces, The Mist tells the harrowing story of a small Maine town engulfed by an unnatural fog teeming with otherworldly monsters. While the creatures provide the external terror, the story’s heart lies in the claustrophobic grocery store where survivors turn on one another, fueled by fear and religious zealotry.
While Frank Darabont’s 2007 film is famous for its devastating, non-canonical ending, early reports suggest Flanagan may lean closer to the original novella’s more ambiguous conclusion.
”Flanagan has a unique ability to find the human heartbeat inside King’s most terrifying concepts,” says horror analyst Alex DiVincenzo. “With The Mist, he isn’t just dealing with monsters in the fog; he’s dealing with the monsters inside the room.”
Flanagan’s Stacked 2026–2027 Slate
The announcement comes at a busy time for the director, whose schedule is arguably the most ambitious in Hollywood horror:
Production Details
The film will be produced under Flanagan’s Red Room banner alongside Tyler Thompson and Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone. No casting has been announced yet, though fans are already speculating whether Flanagan’s “repertory players”—such as Kate Siegel, Carla Gugino, or Henry Thomas—will make an appearance in the supermarket aisles.
The project is currently in the script phase, with production expected to begin once Flanagan wraps his commitments to the upcoming Exorcist film starring Scarlett Johansson and Chiwetel Ejiofor.
