George R.R. Martin has once again addressed the persistent criticism from fans demanding he prioritize finishing The Winds of Winter, the long-delayed sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Speaking at recent events and in interviews, Martin defended his creative autonomy and expressed frustration with the notion that he should work exclusively on Game of Thrones-related projects.
“You can’t please everybody,” Martin said bluntly, responding to backlash over his involvement in other ventures, including producing spin-offs like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and contributing to various anthologies. He emphasized that while he understands fans’ impatience, he refuses to be creatively boxed in.
At New York Comic Con 2025, Martin joked about his “lifelong trouble with deadlines” and reiterated that The Winds of Winter is still in progress. He explained that he needs solitude to write effectively—something increasingly rare amid his packed schedule and public commitments.
The tension reached a boiling point at WorldCon, where a fan publicly asked Martin how he’d feel about someone else finishing the series, citing his age and the delays. Martin reportedly left the stage without responding, and the moment sparked outrage online—even among fans critical of the delays.
Martin has also criticized the “toxic” nature of online fandom, contrasting it with the more respectful discourse of earlier fan cultures. “The internet is toxic in a way that the old fanzine culture was not,” he said, lamenting the vitriol directed at him over the show’s controversial ending and the unfinished books.
Despite the pressure, Martin remains committed to completing his saga on his own terms. “If you don’t like a show, don’t watch it,” he told The Independent, reflecting on the backlash to HBO’s finale and the intense scrutiny he continues to face.
