LOS ANGELES, CA — Just seven years after the Angels last graced the silver screen, Sony Pictures is officially heading back to the Townsend Agency. The studio has announced it is in early development on a brand-new feature film reboot of the iconic Charlie’s Angels franchise.
According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter and Variety on February 13, 2026, the studio has enlisted screenwriter Pete Chiarelli to pen the script. Chiarelli is best known for his work on the hit rom-com The Proposal and the global phenomenon Crazy Rich Asians, suggesting a potential return to the witty, high-energy tone that defined the franchise’s most successful eras.
A Return to the “Flower Films” Era?
Perhaps the most exciting news for longtime fans is the reported involvement of Drew Barrymore. Sources indicate that Barrymore and her production banner, Flower Films, are on board to produce the new installment.
Barrymore was instrumental in the franchise’s cinematic peak in the early 2000s, starring alongside Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu in the McG-directed blockbusters. Her return as a producer has sparked speculation that the new film may lean back into the “fun, stylish, and campy” energy of the 2000s films, moving away from the more grounded, espionage-heavy tone of the 2019 Elizabeth Banks-directed version.
”The brand still has immense global recognition,” said one industry insider. “With the right blend of action and charisma, Sony believes the Angels can still dominate the cultural conversation.”
The Franchise Legacy: A Quick Look back
The Charlie’s Angels IP has seen several iterations since its 1976 television debut:
- 1976–1981: The original TV series starring Farrah Fawcett, Kate Jackson, and Jaclyn Smith.
- 2000–2003: The “McG Era” films, which grossed over $520 million worldwide combined.
- 2011: A short-lived ABC television reboot (canceled after four episodes).
- 2019: The Elizabeth Banks-directed reboot starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
What We Know (And What We Don’t)
While the project is in the “early development” phase, here is the current state of the mission:
While no cast has been announced, social media is already abuzz with “dream casts,” with names like Sydney Sweeney, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy frequently appearing in fan polls.
