LOS ANGELES — Scrub in once more. ABC has officially renewed “Grey’s Anatomy” for its 23rd season, extending its record-breaking run as the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history.
The announcement, which came just days before the Season 22 finale, solidifies the Shonda Rhimes-created series as the cornerstone of the network’s 2026–2027 programming lineup. Despite being over two decades old, the show remains a powerhouse, ranking as the #1 most-streamed series across Disney+ and Hulu in 2025.
The “Meredith” Factor
Fans were relieved to learn that Ellen Pompeo is expected to return for Season 23. While she reduced her on-screen presence starting in Season 19, she continues to serve as the show’s primary narrator and executive producer. Sources indicate she will continue appearing in a limited capacity as Meredith Grey, maintaining the connective tissue that has held Grey Sloan Memorial together since 2005.
Major Cast Shakeups: Departures and Returns
While the renewal brings joy, it also confirms some bittersweet exits. Following the Season 22 finale on May 7, 2026, two veteran cast members will be hanging up their stethoscopes:
- **Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt): Departing after 17 seasons on the show.
- **Kim Raver (Teddy Altman): Departing alongside McKidd as their characters’ storylines reach a natural conclusion.
However, the “Big Three” original cast members—Ellen Pompeo, Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber)—are all slated to return, ensuring the show’s foundational heart remains intact.
A Dominant Force in Streaming
The renewal was almost a foregone conclusion given the show’s staggering digital performance. According to Nielsen, Grey’s was the No. 2 most-streamed series in the U.S. across all platforms last year.
”The show has successfully bridged the generational gap,” says TV analyst Jeff Bock. “You have Gen Z discovering the early ‘MAGIC’ years (Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie, Cristina) on TikTok and Netflix, while older audiences remain loyal to the linear broadcast on Thursday nights. It’s a rare double-threat in the modern media landscape.”
The 2026-2027 ABC Lineup
With Grey’s Anatomy locked in, ABC’s future schedule is looking robust. The medical drama will anchor a slate that includes:
- 9-1-1 (Season 10)
- Abbott Elementary (Season 6)
- High Potential (Season 3)
- 9-1-1: Nashville (Season 2)
As the series approaches the massive 475-episode milestone during the upcoming season, the question is no longer if the show will end, but rather how much longer it can keep beating its own records. For now, the doctors of Grey Sloan are nowhere near retirement.
