In a revelation that has ignited the imaginations of cinephiles and literary fans alike, Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro has confirmed he is in possession of a completed screenplay for a radical reimagining of Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo.
The director, fresh off the critical success of his 2025 adaptation of Frankenstein, described the project as a “Gothic Western”—a stylistic blend that promised to be one of the most unique takes on the classic revenge tale ever conceived.
A “Gothic Western” Three Decades in the Making
Speaking via social media in February 2026, del Toro revealed that the script was originally developed in the late 1990s (specifically between 1997 and 1998) in collaboration with legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola.
The director’s vision deviates sharply from the swashbuckling adventure seen in previous film versions:
- The Setting: Set in Mexico, the film reimagines the story within a “steampunk gothic western” aesthetic.
- A “Vampiric” Count: Del Toro has previously noted that his version of Edmond Dantès only emerges at night, dressed in black, red, and gold—resembling a Dracula-like figure of the frontier.
- Mechanical Innovation: In a classic del Toro flourish, the Count features a mechanical arm designed to help him draw his gun faster than any opponent.
- Emotional Weight: The director has shared that he wrote much of the script during the period of his father’s kidnapping in 1998, infusing the narrative with a raw sense of “rage” and personal catharsis.
The “Franken-Band” Returns?
The news resurfaced after fans campaigned for del Toro to reunite the cast of his hit Frankenstein film for the adaptation. The trio of Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth has become a favorite suggestion for the leads in this dark tale of betrayal and vengeance.
While del Toro confirmed the screenplay’s existence and his enduring love for it, he noted the project has remained “locked away” for years due to his busy schedule and the recent release of other high-profile Monte Cristo adaptations, including the 2024 French blockbuster and the 2025/2026 PBS Masterpiece series.
A Legacy of Monsters and Men
The news comes at a high point in del Toro’s career. His recent Frankenstein (2025) has just secured nine Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. With that momentum, many in Hollywood believe the “perfect conditions” del Toro once cited as necessary to film his “huge” vision for Monte Cristo may finally be aligning.
