LOS ANGELES — After years of languishing in “development hell,” the highly anticipated Spawn reboot has reached a major milestone. Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx, who has been attached to the titular role since 2018, has officially confirmed that the screenplay for the film—tentatively titled King Spawn—is complete and ready for the next phase of production.
Speaking at a recent industry event, Foxx expressed his excitement for the project, noting that the wait will be well worth it for fans of Todd McFarlane’s iconic antihero. “The script is done, and it is incredible,” Foxx shared. “We wanted to make sure we got the tone exactly right—dark, gritty, and unlike any superhero movie people have seen before.”
A Hard-R Vision
Unlike the 1997 adaptation, this version is being developed under Blumhouse Productions with a focus on a “Hard-R” rating. Creator Todd McFarlane has long championed a version of Spawn that leans into horror and supernatural suspense rather than traditional capes-and-tights action.
The script saw a powerhouse collaboration between several high-profile writers:
- Scott Silver: Best known for the dark, character-driven Joker.
- Malcolm Spellman: Showrunner for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
- Matthew Mixon: A rising voice in dramatic storytelling.
The Road Ahead
While the script is finished, producer Jason Blum has previously emphasized that the studio will not rush into production until every element is perfect. However, with Foxx’s recent confirmation and the script in hand, the project is expected to begin scouting for an A-list director to take the helm.
”I’ve seen some of the concept art and read the pages,” Foxx added. “It’s visceral. It’s special. We’re ready to bring this thing to life.”
With the 35th anniversary of the Spawn comic approaching, the timing for a cinematic resurrection couldn’t be better. Fans are now looking toward a potential 2026 or 2027 release window as the project gathers momentum.
