LOS ANGELES — The bureau has found its new believer. Emmy nominee Himesh Patel (Station Eleven, Yesterday) has officially joined the cast of Ryan Coogler’s highly anticipated reboot of The X-Files, set to air on Hulu.
Patel will star as the male lead alongside Danielle Deadwyler (Till, The Woman in the Yard), who was cast in February. The duo will portray a new generation of FBI agents investigating the unexplained, stepping into the atmospheric shoes originally filled by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
A New Chapter, Not a Remake
While the series shares the title and DNA of Chris Carter’s legendary sci-fi procedural, Coogler’s vision is reportedly a “fresh start” rather than a direct recasting of Mulder and Scully.
- Original Characters: Patel and Deadwyler will play entirely original agents—described in the pilot logline as “two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents” who form an unlikely bond when assigned to the long-shuttered paranormal division.
- The Creative Powerhouse: Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Sinners) is writing and directing the pilot. The project falls under his overall deal with Disney via his Proximity Media banner.
- Showrunner: Jennifer Yale (See, The Copenhagen Test) will serve as showrunner and executive producer alongside Coogler and original creator Chris Carter.
Casting the “Modern Mystery”
Patel’s casting marks a significant win for the production. The actor has become a staple of prestige genre storytelling, recently appearing in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet and the upcoming Greek epic The Odyssey.
Insiders suggest the chemistry between Patel and Deadwyler was the deciding factor for the pilot greenlight. The reboot is expected to tackle contemporary anxieties—shifting the 90s-era “government paranoia” to a modern landscape of digital disinformation and deep-state conspiracies.
“The truth is out there. Welcome to the weird,” Patel teased in a brief social media post following the announcement.
Production Details
Filming for the pilot is expected to begin in May 2026. Early character breakdowns suggest the story may involve Indigenous communities and Bureau of Indian Affairs police, hinting at a more diverse and geographically varied exploration of American folklore and extraterrestrial mystery.
While legacy stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny have not been confirmed for appearances, Anderson recently called Coogler’s script “really fucking cool” and “something different and special,” leaving the door open for potential cameos should the pilot go to series.
