In a move that’s reshaping the future of superhero cinema, DC Studios co-head James Gunn has officially confirmed what fans have long suspected: the Justice Gang introduced in Superman is the embryonic form of the DC Universe’s new Justice League.
Gunn’s revelation came during a recent interview, where he addressed speculation surrounding the team’s role in the broader DCU. “Yeah, I think you could say that,” Gunn said when asked if the Justice Gang could be considered the beginnings of the Justice League. “I don’t know why not, but I wouldn’t jump the gun with thinking that’s going to happen tomorrow”.
The Rise of the Justice Gang
The Justice Gang made their debut in Superman, starring David Corenswet, as a coalition of heroes inspired by Superman’s exploits. Bankrolled by billionaire Maxwell Lord (played by Sean Gunn), the team includes Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Mister Terrific (Edi Gathegi), and Metamorpho (Anthony Carrigan), who joins the group by the film’s end.
Their mission? Defend Jarhanpur and dismantle Lex Luthor’s reign of terror. The team’s chemistry and effectiveness have sparked comparisons to the classic Justice League, though Gunn is clear that this is just the beginning.
A New Era, Not a Reboot
While no official Justice League film is currently in development, Gunn’s comments—and the narrative seeds planted in Superman—suggest that DC Studios is laying the groundwork for a new generation of heroes. This aligns with the studio’s “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters” initiative, which includes upcoming projects like Supergirl, Clayface, and the HBO Max series Lanterns.
Gunn also acknowledged the legacy baggage of the Justice League brand, referencing the critical failure of the 2017 film and the polarizing release of Zack Snyder’s cut in 2021. “The Justice Gang feels more like a B-team right now,” Gunn admitted, “but the path is already being paved”.
What’s Next?
With Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav touting Superman as the first step in a bold 10-year plan, fans can expect the Justice Gang to evolve. Whether they’ll eventually include icons like Batman, Wonder Woman, or Supergirl remains to be seen, but the foundation is undeniably in place.
For now, the Justice Gang stands as a symbol of transition—a bridge between the old and the new, and a promise that the DCU’s most legendary team is far from forgotten.
