SANTA MONICA, CA — Following the massive global success of its predecessor, Lionsgate has officially planted a flag for the highly anticipated sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret. The studio announced on March 30, 2026, that the psychological thriller will arrive in theaters on December 17, 2027.
The news comes as the first film, The Housemaid, continues to dominate the cultural conversation. Since its release in December 2025, the R-rated thriller has grossed a staggering $399 million worldwide against a modest $35 million budget, officially becoming the highest-grossing film in Sydney Sweeney’s career as a leading actress.
A Star-Studded Sequel
The sequel will see the return of Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, the reformed ex-con who has a knack for finding herself in the middle of domestic nightmares. Joining her for the second installment is Academy Award nominee Kirsten Dunst, whose role is currently being kept under wraps but is rumored to be the “new, even more twisted” employer.
Key Cast and Crew:
- Director: Paul Feig (The Housemaid, A Simple Favor)
- Lead Stars: Sydney Sweeney and Kirsten Dunst
- Returning Cast: Michele Morrone (Enzo)
- Screenplay: Rebecca Sonnenshine (re-adapting the novel by Freida McFadden)
The “Holiday Thriller” Tradition
By choosing a mid-December date, Lionsgate is looking to replicate the “counterprogramming” magic of the first film. In 2025, The Housemaid successfully carved out a massive audience despite opening against James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash.
In 2027, The Housemaid’s Secret will face a similarly formidable opponent: Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars. However, industry analysts believe the “Verified Hot” status of the franchise—which holds a 92% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes—makes it a safe bet for adult audiences looking for an alternative to superhero spectacles.
”The script is excellent, and there’s a lot of excitement around it,” said producer Todd Lieberman. “We actually started writing the sequel before the first one even came out because we knew this world had so much more to give.”
Production Timeline
Production is slated to begin in late 2026. The story is expected to follow the events of Freida McFadden’s second book in the trilogy, which sees Millie taking a job with a wealthy technology mogul and his reclusive wife, only to discover that the blood on the floor is just the beginning of the home’s secrets.
For fans who can’t wait until 2027, the original The Housemaid began streaming on Starz on April 1, 2026, where it has already climbed to the #1 spot on the platform.
