HOLLYWOOD — Netflix has officially struck gold on the Amalfi Coast. In a high-profile pairing that has the industry buzzing, Oscar winners Matthew McConaughey and Zoe Saldaña are set to star in the upcoming romantic caper, Positano.
The project, which was first reported by Deadline and has since been fast-tracked by the streaming giant, marks the first time the two A-list stars will share the screen.
The Creative Powerhouse
The film is being developed by some of the most respected names in the business:
- Director: Daniel Roher, the Oscar-winning filmmaker behind the acclaimed documentary Navalny. Positano follows his narrative feature debut, the crime thriller Tuner.
- Writers: The script was penned by the duo Alessandro Tanaka and Brian Gatewood, known for their work on Sharper and The Sitter.
- Producers: Industry veterans Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan of Working Title (Notting Hill, Love Actually) are producing, signaling a return to the classic, high-gloss romantic adventures the studio is known for.
Plot and Setting
While specific plot details are currently being kept “under lock and key,” the film is described as a romantic caper set against the stunning backdrop of the Italian hillside town of Positano. Insiders suggest the movie will blend McConaughey’s signature charm with Saldaña’s dynamic screen presence in a story involving love, intrigue, and the picturesque Amalfi Coast.
A “Career Resurgence” and a Box Office Queen
For Matthew McConaughey, Positano represents a continued return to live-action roles after a five-year hiatus. 2025 has been a busy year for the actor, with the release of the survival thriller The Lost Bus and the crime drama The Rivals of Amziah King. Returning to the romantic genre—a space he dominated in the 2000s—is seen by many as a “full circle” moment for the Dallas Buyers Club star.
Zoe Saldaña enters the project following a massive year of her own. She recently won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Netflix’s Emilia Pérez and is currently dominating the global box office in James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash.
What’s Next?
Netflix reportedly “swooped in” to secure the package after both lead actors expressed immediate interest in the script. Production is expected to begin in 2026 on location in Italy.
