In early 2025, a wave of casting speculation hit the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wicked star Cynthia Erivo emerged as a top fan-favorite and self-professed candidate to play Ororo Munroe, better known as Storm.
Following her powerhouse performance as Elphaba, Erivo sparked a global conversation when she officially “called her shot,” expressing a deep desire to bring the weather-controlling mutant to life in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men reboot.
Erivo’s Vision: “Uncovering the Grandeur”
During an interview with the National Board of Review in January 2025, Erivo was asked to manifest a dream role for her post-Wicked career. Her answer was immediate and specific:
”I really want to play Storm. I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven’t uncovered how grand she is and all of that inner turmoil that she has. So I think there’s a world where we could do something like that.”
The actress’s comments resonated with fans who have long felt that previous live-action iterations—portrayed by Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp—rarely leaned into the “Goddess” aspect of Storm’s comic book origins. Erivo’s vocal interest came at a strategic time, as Marvel Studios had recently begun active development on a new mutant-centric saga following the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine.
The Marvel Casting Landscape
While Erivo’s talent is undisputed, her “campaign” for the role faced immediate debate within the MCU community. As of early 2026, the status of the X-Men reboot remains in a state of flux:
- The “Age Gap” Theory: Several industry “scoopers” have suggested that Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier are looking for actors in their early-to-mid 20s (such as Sadie Sink for Jean Grey) to allow the team to grow over a ten-year arc. At 39, Erivo would represent a more mature, established version of the character.
- The Presence Factor: Despite some fans noting her 5’0″ stature (contrasting Storm’s imposing comic book height), many pointed to her “Defying Gravity” vocals and commanding stage presence as proof she could embody a goddess-level hero.
- The Competitors: Erivo isn’t the only name in the ring. Rumors have also swirled around DeWanda Wise (Jurassic World Dominion) and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as potential candidates for the MCU’s Ororo Munroe.
What’s Next for the X-Men?
While Marvel Studios has not made an official casting announcement, Kevin Feige has confirmed that the “Mutant Era” will begin in earnest after Avengers: Secret Wars.
Currently, a script by Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) is reportedly undergoing final polishes. If Marvel decides to go with an older, regal version of the X-Men’s leadership, Erivo’s massive momentum from Wicked: For Good (released in late 2025) might just make her the frontrunner for the crown.
