HARLEM, NY – After years of maintaining that his time as the bulletproof Hero of Hire was in the “rearview mirror,” Mike Colter has finally given fans a concrete reason to hope. In a major shift from his previous stance, the actor recently confirmed that he has officially been in talks about reprising his role as Luke Cage within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Speaking on the On That Note podcast with Shawn Stockman this week (January 2026), Colter broke his long-standing silence on the rumors. “Listen, I will say this… I’ve had conversations… and I’ll leave it at that,” Colter teased.
From “No” to “Unfinished Business”
Colter explained that his previous reluctance stemmed from a desire to explore other characters and avoid being pigeonholed. However, the successful integration of his former Netflix co-stars into the Disney+ era seems to have changed his perspective.
”Before I was like ‘no.’ Look, I love playing Luke Cage, but I also love acting, I love doing different things,” Colter explained. “But now I think to myself, ‘I have some unfinished business there.’ I talked to Cheo [Hodari Coker, showrunner] about it… Daredevil’s back, Jessica’s back… we’re in a better position to see this come into fruition faster than we think.”
The “Defenders” Reunion Logic
The timing of these talks coincides with several major shifts in Marvel’s “street-level” storytelling:
- Daredevil: Born Again: Season 2 of the Disney+ series is set to premiere this March 2026.
- Jessica Jones Returns: Krysten Ritter is officially confirmed to return as Jessica Jones in the upcoming Born Again season, reuniting with Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio.
- The Power Man Strategy: Industry insiders suggest Marvel is moving away from reboots and toward a “continuation” model for the original Netflix characters, acknowledging them as official MCU canon.
While no official series has been announced, rumors suggest Cage could first reappear as a supporting character in Daredevil: Born Again Season 3 or a rumored Heroes for Hire project.
Colter’s admission marks a turning point for the “Save Luke Cage” campaign that has persisted since the show’s 2018 cancellation. With Jon Bernthal (The Punisher) also fully integrated back into the fold, only Finn Jones (Iron Fist) remains a question mark for a full Defenders reunion.
