HAWKINS, IN – The shadows of 1959 are finally reaching the small screen. Netflix has officially confirmed that the critically acclaimed Broadway production, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, is being professionally filmed for a global streaming release.
The announcement comes as a relief to fans who haven’t been able to make the trip to London’s West End or New York’s Marquis Theatre. The production serves as a “must-watch” bridge for the franchise, providing the definitive origin story for the series’ ultimate antagonist and the dark history of Hawkins itself.
Back to the Beginning: 1959
Set over two decades before the events of the original 1983-set series, The First Shadow explores a different era of the town. The story follows a young Henry Creel (played by Tony nominee Louis McCartney) as his family arrives in Hawkins seeking a fresh start.
However, the “regular town with regular worries” quickly becomes anything but. The prequel features teenage versions of the show’s beloved adult characters, including:
- Jim Hopper Jr.: A rebellious teen with a car that won’t start.
- Joyce Maldonado: An aspiring graduate desperate to leave Hawkins.
- Bob Newby: A radio enthusiast whose sister won’t take his show seriously.
Why It Matters to the Final Season
While the main Stranger Things TV series has recently concluded its epic run, creators Matt and Ross Duffer have emphasized that the play is “officially canon.”
The narrative reveals the true origins of Henry Creel’s psychokinetic powers and his eventual transformation into the villain known as Vecna. Insiders suggest the filmed version will act as the “final piece of the puzzle” for fans looking to fully understand the mythology before the franchise’s story is completely closed.
Production Details
The filming took place this week at the Marquis Theatre in New York. To accommodate the high-fidelity shoot, performances were paused from February 10 to February 14, 2026.
The filmed version is expected to utilize “cinematic stagecraft,” blending the live practical effects and illusions designed by Jamie Harrison and Chris Fisher with professional camera work to capture the intensity of the performances.
What’s Next for the Franchise?
The Stranger Things universe shows no signs of slowing down. Beyond the filmed play, Netflix is also developing:
- Stranger Things ’85: An upcoming animated series.
- Untitled Live-Action Spin-off: A new series featuring fresh characters within the same universe.
