As Netflix celebrates a decade of streaming in Japan, the platform has unveiled three ambitious new Japanese series slated for release in 2026: the anime adaptation Steel Ball Run, the biographical drama Straight to Hell, and the meta-comedy Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?. Each project reflects Netflix’s deepening investment in Japanese storytelling, blending genre innovation with cultural introspection.
Steel Ball Run: JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Rides Again
Anime fans worldwide are buzzing over Steel Ball Run, the latest installment in Hirohiko Araki’s legendary JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure franchise. Set in 19th-century America, the story follows Johnny Joestar, a paraplegic former jockey, and Gyro Zeppeli, a mysterious outlaw, as they compete in a brutal cross-continental horse race. The series explores themes of destiny, belief, and transformation, all rendered in Araki’s signature surreal style.
Directed by Yasuhiro Kimura and produced by David Production, the anime promises high-octane visuals and emotional depth. “Steel Ball Run is a story that depicts characters running through a grand race, staking their own beliefs,” Kimura said. “My heart is pounding with excitement to be entrusted with directing this anime adaptation”.
Straight to Hell: The Life of Japan’s Most Infamous Fortune-Teller
Starring Erika Toda (Death Note), Straight to Hell dramatizes the life of Kazuko Hosoki, a fortune-teller who dominated Japanese media from the 1980s through the 2000s. Known for her blunt predictions—“You’ll die,” “You’ll go to hell”—Hosoki became a cultural lightning rod, selling millions of books and appearing on countless TV shows.
Directed by Tomoyuki Takimoto (Grasshopper) and Norichika Ohba, the series spans Hosoki’s life from age 17 to 66, revealing the woman behind the public persona. Toda admitted initial skepticism: “I just thought a flashy fortune-teller had shown up on TV… Who would have imagined that I’d be the one to play her?”.
Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?: Fame, Memory, and the Vanishing Act
Koji Yakusho, Cannes Best Actor winner for Perfect Days, stars in Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?, a surreal comedy-drama written by Kankuro Kudo (Let’s Get Divorced, Extremely Inappropriate!). Yakusho plays Gen Takasegawa, a celebrated Japanese actor who returns home after two years abroad—only to discover he’s been completely forgotten by everyone.
The series probes the human obsession with recognition in the age of social media. “Everyone has a surplus of desire for recognition,” Kudo said. “They perform, exaggerate, edit themselves… I’ve portrayed it as a comedy, without denying or affirming it”.
Yakusho added, “This is the second time in my life that I’ve been given the role of ‘an actor.’ The shoot will be a long one, but I’ll do my best until the very end to make this a work that everyone can enjoy”.
A Decade of Streaming, A New Era of Storytelling
These three series mark a turning point in Netflix’s Japanese strategy, blending anime legacy, biographical drama, and existential comedy to showcase the country’s creative range. As Netflix stated, “Looking ahead to the next decade, we will continue to push boundaries and bring unforgettable entertainment from Japan to the world”.
