The Shelby legacy is far from over. Peaky Blinders, the gritty British gangster drama that captivated audiences for nearly a decade, is officially returning with a two-season sequel series set in 1953 post-war Birmingham. Created by Steven Knight and produced by Netflix and the BBC, the new chapter promises a blood-soaked saga of ambition, reconstruction, and generational reckoning.
A New Era, A New Generation of Shelbys
Set against the backdrop of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham Blitz, the sequel series will explore the brutal contest to control Britain’s massive post-war reconstruction. The official synopsis reads:
“Britain, 1953. After being heavily bombed in WWII, Birmingham is building a better future out of concrete and steel. The race to own Birmingham’s reconstruction project becomes a contest of mythical dimensions, with the Shelby family right at its blood-soaked heart.”
The story shifts focus to a new generation of Shelbys, though the family’s signature blend of violence, ambition, and charisma remains intact. While casting details are still under wraps, Cillian Murphy—who portrayed Tommy Shelby—is confirmed to return as an executive producer, and will reprise his role in the upcoming Peaky Blinders feature film, The Immortal Man, which bridges the original series and the sequel.
Production and Creative Team
The sequel will consist of two six-episode seasons, filmed at Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham. The production is helmed by Banijay UK’s Kudos and Garrison Drama, with executive producers including Murphy, Knight, Karen Wilson, Martin Haines, Jamie Glazebrook, Jo McClellan (BBC), and Mona Qureshi and Toby Bentley (Netflix).
Knight expressed his excitement, stating:
“Once again it will be rooted in Birmingham and will tell the story of a city rising from the ashes of the Birmingham blitz. The new generation of Shelbys have taken the wheel and it will be a hell of a ride.”
What Comes Next
Before the sequel series hits screens, fans can look forward to The Immortal Man, the long-awaited Peaky Blinders film set during World War II. Starring Murphy alongside Rebecca Ferguson, Barry Keoghan, Stephen Graham, and Tim Roth, the film is expected to premiere in 2026.
The sequel series will follow shortly after, continuing the saga of power, legacy, and survival in a rapidly changing Britain. For fans of the original, this marks not just a return—but a reinvention.
